Where did Forest Gump stop running?

During our travels out west we drove many roads that run across wide basins from one mountain range to another (Basin Range Topography).  In the movie Forest Gump, I remembeedr he stopped running on such a road and wondered where that segment was filmed.  The question simmered in the back of my mind as we traveled.

The movie was playing on TV the other night so I snapped a picture to help me identify the location.

After studying the seen for a few minutes, I realized we had already been there and didn't know it.

It's north of Monument Valley on US 163 in Utah. We stopped at this "wide spot in the road" to take a break and switch driver not knowing it was the iconic location.  I did notice a lot of people stopping and taking pictures but I figured just the scenery was the a attraction.

Of course I could have just Googled it, but whats the fun in that!

Dec 24, 2017

On Christmas Eve Ajo celebrates the holiday with the arrival of Santa Claus at the Plaza.

Christmas Eve sunset, awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus
He arrives at the Curly School campus, making his first appearance in the historic Bell Tower.

Then he mounts his "Sleigh" and makes a triumphant tour around the Plaza before settling on his throne to hear the wishes of the Ajo children.

Even the Fire Department gets into the Christmas spirit.

Note: A post wet out Jan 3 saying we where "On The Road Again".  It was originally posted June 2017 and was sent in error, we're still in Ajo.

Dec 2017
We left Portal, AZ on Nov. 29.  After a whirlwind day of shopping in Tucson to stock  up on supplies we arrived at the Shadow Ridge RV Resort in Ajo, AZ. on Dec 1. We're volunteering with the US Fish and Wildlife service at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and they provide this campsite.

There's Juuuust enough room for our rig. It's tight but comfortable.

Here's a link to a the history of Ajo.
In recent years, Ajo has become a popular snow bird destination and a burgeoning artist community.
