Valley of Fire SP, Nevada

After an overnight at a Wal-Mart in north Las Vegas, we arrived at the first Navada State Park (1935), Valley of Fire.  

All the campsites are first come first serve and the lady at the gate said there were only a few sites available (at 9am) so as usual, we’d take our chances.  Not to worry, people leave all times of the morning and there were several to choose from. We found a nice roomy site, #13, my lucky number.

This is our first stay at a Nevada State Park and we were pretty pleased.  They offer some full service sites ($30) if you needed one, we didn’t, so we chose a water only site.  Your camping fee ($20) includes hot showers, dump station and the daily park entrance fee (in this case $10).  So, if you plan to spend several days in the park, as we did, the fee to camp is only $10 a night. There are no bad campsites. Their all nestled in amongst the very red rocks.

Check out time is a generous 2 pm, so we decided to do one more morning hike before leaving. We'd hiked almost all the more common trails listed on the park map. The only one left was White Dome and that turned out to be our favorite.

White dome is one of those loop trails you definitely want to hike clockwise. There's a very steep climb down at the beginning with a nice gentle slope to climb out.
