John Day Fossil Beds Nat'l Monument

June 4, 2019

After leaving John Day, OR (Kam Wah Chung museum) we still had 56 miles to get to our campground near Kinberly, OR. John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is actually 45 miles from the town of John Day.  The first spectacle we encountered was the drive through Picture Gorge.

Driving through Picture Gorge.

Home for a few days, Lone Pine CG, see blue arrow.

Lone Pine CG is about 19 miles from the monument visitors center.   The drive north passes through more spectacular scenery.

Sheep Rock

Cathedral Rock.

We finally made it to Lone Pine CG about 5 in the afternoon.

Campsite at Lone Pine CG with a nice view of the north fork of the John Day River.

The next day, we drove the 19 miles back to the visitors center to see what there was to see.  Most of the fossils found in this area are from the age of mammels, 30 to 18 milion years ago.

There's also an active paleontology lab in the visitors center.  You can observe their work through a large window.

Hiking the Island In Time trail.

Coming next, Newberry Nat'l Volcanic Monument
