South Fork, Colorado

June 17, 2022

We stayed at Kenny Flats Rd.  south of Pagosa Springs CO, for 8 days.  With some rain in the forecast, we headed to a small campground outside of South Fork CO, Moon Valley RV Resort,  for some deep cleaning.

Moon Vally RV "Resort?", not really, just a nice little RV park we really enjoyed.

Originally the Kenny Flats Rd. boondocking spot seemed idyllic. We got the sight we were hoping for, at the edge of a meadow with a near-by pond that attracted elk and dear.

But as our time progressed, it got hotter and drier.
The dirt turned into a dry powder. As more vehicles traveled the less developed part of the road the powder got deeper.  We tried to walk those roads but every step produced little clouds of very fine dust.  Needless to say that dust got into and on everything. While there we scouted several other sites that would be much less effected by the dust.  We plan to return sometime in the future with cooler weather.

It rained off and on the first 2 days at Moon Valley giving us ample time to do our inside cleaning.  The rain did a pretty good job of rinsing off the outside of the truck and camper.

The third day was clear and cool, perfect for a day trip through the old mining town of Creede CO (very touristy) and on to North Clear Creek Falls.

A little geologic history...

After 4 nights at Moon Valley, we moved on to the next adventure.

June 9, 2022

We finally made it to Colorado...

... just barely, about 14 miles over the state line, south of Pagosa Springs CO.

Morning walk...

Interesting bird prints.  Figured out the large print is a Raven.

The Catwalk

June 4, 2022

About 70 miles northwest of Silver City is the little community of Glenwood NM.  We'd traveled through Gleenwood several times and knew about The Catwalk but had never taken the time to stop and see it.  This time we did.

A little history...

We originally intended to stay the night in a forest service campground dry camping, but with 92 the forcast high we opted for a small road side rv park right across from the road to The Catwalk.

The next day we finally made it to Apache Creek forest service campground.

Lucky sighting of an Elk on the hillside during our evening walk.

The heat keeps chasing us. With another 90 degree day forecasted, we moved on after just one night at Apache Creek, heading north.

Heading North

June 1, 2022 cont.

After leaving Portal AZ, we headed north into New Mexico toward Silver City to restock.

Smoke from the "Black" fire, 27 miles northeast of Silver City in the Gila National Forest.

The fire has consumed 264,000 so far and as of this writing it's only 29% contained.  Luckily (for us) the prevailing wind is blowing the smoke east. From Silver City, we plan to go northwest, skirt around the fire heading toward western Colorado.

Looks like this summer we'll be dodging smoke and fires.
